Stand for Children was one of the community organizations that was included on the Orleans Parish School Board’s action item for the establishment of the John McDonogh Ad Hoc Committee. Daughter of former New York mayor, Michael Bloomberg, Emma Bloomberg, is the chair of the Stand for Children board. Mercedes Schneider notes: “Emma is the daughter of a man who has had mayoral control of New York City’s schools since 2001” and who has “allow[ed] well-financed charter schools to move into occupied public school buildings.” Emma Bloomberg also serves as the chairperson of Leadership for Education, a nonprofit organization “dedicated to empowering Teach for America corps members and alumni to grow as leaders,” so that they can “serve as a transformative force.”
Louisiana is a Stand for Children state. In its 2012 annual report, the organization touts among its successes:
Endorsing “education champions” that won their seats on the Orleans Parish School Board.
Helping to pass teacher tenure bill HB 974, which links performance to school personnel decisions such as tenure, compensation and reductions in force.
