Eighth Annual Asante Awards Ceremony Takes Place May 29
The Asante Awards will be held from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at City Park Pavilion of Two Sisters, 101 Victory Ave.
The Asante Foundation Awards and Festival is a celebration of the pinnacles of the African descendant’s creativity. It was created to celebrate the contributions that many local New Orleans artists have made with little to no recognition, by acknowledging, giving thanks (Asante) and presenting them with awards. This year, the Asante Foundation Awards honors local educators.
This year’s honorees are: Dr. Millie Charles, who will be honored as the Lifetime Achiever, Albert Woodfox, Jesse McBride, Isaac Joseph, Dr. Calvin Mackie, Dr. Rene Lewis Carter, Jerry McGowan, Cynthia Cade, Eric “Lionman” O’Neal, Min. Willie Muhammed, Dr. Joseph Bouie, Dr. Raynard Sanders, Ausettua Amor Amenkum, Laverne Woods Dunn, Carol Bebelle, Happy Johnson, Dr. Karen Martin, Gloria Moultrie, Barbara Jefferson, Alphonse Davis, Sr., Paul Beaulieu, John Charles, Pastor John Pierre and Sylvia Crier.
The Asante Awards invites the entire city to celebrate those who contribute to, inspire, and best represent the African-American community that is the heart of New Orleans. Tickets are $45 each. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.asanteusa.org.
