The 55th Session of the Progressive National Baptist Convention started earlier this week in New Orleans with a focus on voting rights.
On Thursday, Aug. 11, the conference will host special guest, Sen. Tim Kaine—Hillary Clinton’s running mate, the Democratic nominee for Vice President of the United States.
The conference kicked off at the Hyatt Regency hotel Monday, Aug. 8 with more than 5,000 attendees representing approximately 2,000 churches with week-long events that focus on voter engagement and policing tactics.
Elected in 2012, Kaine is a Democratic senator from Virginia. He serves on the Armed Services, Budget, Foreign Relations and Aging committees. He has also worked as a missionary, civil rights lawyer, teacher, and elected official.
He is one of only 30 people in American history to have served as a Mayor, Governor and United States Senator.
Kaine is expected to address the conference at 10 a.m. Thursday. The conference ends Friday, Aug. 12.
