The first hint of what ESSENCE Festival of Culture 2026 will sound like dropped this week, and if the early lineup is any sign, women are about to run the Superdome.
Festival organizers announced the first wave of performers for the annual Fourth of July weekend celebration, revealing a multigenerational lineup of women who have shaped — and are still shaping — the sound of Black music. It’s a mix that spans decades of influence. Patti LaBelle, whose voice and stage presence have defined soul music for more than 60 years, returns to a festival stage she’s helped electrify for years. But the 2026 festival is also making room for the artists carrying the culture forward.
Cardi B, the Grammy-winning rapper whose career has helped redefine what success looks like for women in hip-hop, will make her ESSENCE Festival debut. The announcement comes during Women’s History Month and signals what festival organizers describe as a concert series led by artists who have built careers on their own terms while influencing music, culture and business along the way. By day, the Ernest N.
