Southern University of New Orleans (SUNO) has been named the Tom Joyner Foundation “School of the Month” for February 2017 as part of a month-long campaign to raise money for scholarships to help students at the Historically Black College and University.
SUNO opened its doors Sept. 21, 1959. It now has more than 2,435 students on its 17-acre campus.
“We’re excited to have SUNO as one of our partner schools,” said Tom Joyner, founder and chairman of the Foundation and host of the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show. “You know we’re all about making sure our students at HBCUs are able to complete their education.”
“On behalf of the students, faculty, staff and alumni of Southern University at New Orleans, I want to thank the Tom Joyner Foundation for selecting SUNO as the “School of the Month” for February,” SUNO Chancellor Lisa Mims-Devezin said. “We hope everyone will dig deep and give as much as possible to help SUNO students reach their educational and career goals.”
The campaign co-chairs are Naaman Stewart, president of the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club, and Bessie Vaughn, president of the Southern University at New Orleans Alumni Association. A kick-off celebration was held Jan. 31 at Zulu’s Roy E. Glapion Building, to get the campaign off to a great start by generating more than $12,000 in contributions.
As one of the Tom Joyner Foundation “Schools of the Month,” SUNO will be promoted by the Tom Joyner Morning Show, which airs locally on Old School 106.7/KMEZ. The University will receive funds raised from listeners, alumni and other interested parties this month.
