Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) will honor its 2020 Spring graduates on Saturday, May 16 through a virtual graduation ceremony.

“Commencements are the ‘super bowl’ of any higher education institution where we see graduates walk across the stage and hear the cheers of their loved ones and friends,” said James H. Ammons Jr., Interim Chancellor. “We would have never imagined that this year would be any different, but it is. We are a resilient community that has faced Hurricane Katrina and major floods; therefore, we will not let COVID-19 stop us from celebrating our graduates’ Big Day.”

The virtual experience is designed to create a memorable celebration for the graduating class while also providing an opportunity for family, faculty, staff, alumni and friends to offer their congratulations. The Virtual platform, hosted by Full Measure Education, will feature celebratory content, including a video from the SUNO community and social media filters that will allow graduates to virtually wear a graduation cap.

Under the plan, graduates will receive emails and text messages inviting them to participate the special virtual/online graduation celebration, which will include video messages from Interim Chancellor Ammons; as well as Southern University System President/Chancellor Dr. Ray Belton, Chairman of the Southern University System Board of Supervisors Domoine Rutledge; Vice Chancellor for Academic, Evening/Weekend and Online Affairs Dr. David S. Adegboye; and SUNO Alumni President, Wonda Crawford.

Social media engagement will include specially designed SUNO graduate filters on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, as well as the unique hashtag #FOREVERSUNO2020.

More information about viewing the event will be posted on the University’s website at www.suno.edu.

In addition to the virtual ceremony, SUNO is planning for the traditional in-person ceremony for the Class of 2020 to be held tentatively in mid-December.
